MELCHI WOKE WITH A gasp. A trickle of sweat ran down his face. His head throbbed with a dull ache. Where was he? He tried to sit up, but his body refused to respond. A burning pain was crawling up from the back of his leg. The creature. He’d been bitten by a Mulo!

By becoming the enemy, he shall shield the world from the enemy’s dark stain . . .

Gasping out loud, he climbed to his knees and focused blurry eyes on the dark cityscape surrounding him. He was still on the roof. Had he fallen asleep or passed out? He crawled to the edge of the roof and looked across the street to the brightly lit hotel. Reaching out with his mind, he sifted through the buzzing presences in the hotel. The Mulo wasn’t there. Where could it have gone? He had been waiting all day.

Hailey . . .

Melchi grabbed his backpack and climbed onto his feet. What if the Mulo found her while he was asleep? He took a step and paused. If the Mulo had found her, she’d already be dead. But if he went to her now, chances were good he would lead it right to her. And the two of them together would send out a signal the Mulo could follow for miles.

He turned and settled back down on the roof. Might as well make himself comfortable. The Mulo might not come back for a long, long time.
